Although raining remained stopped for sometimes, sufferings of the people of Chittagong are yet to be removed as high tide flood creates water logging at many places in the port city.
The tidal waters entered the coastal areas at Halishahar, Muradpur, Chaktai, Khatonganj, Anwara, Banshkhali in Chittagong as the coastal embankment from Patenga to Sitakunda and Anwara and Banshkhali were damaged at many spots. The sufferings of the people know no bounds due to the tidal water every day.
The monsoon rain continued for consecutive 10 days in Chittagong and adjoining districts including Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachari which disrupts the lives of people. People cannot go out for their important works as the maximum low lying areas of the port city Chittagong went into knee deep waters. Carrying of the essentials from country’s main commercial hubs Khatoongonj, Chaktai, Korbanigonj, Asadgonj etc were also disrupted due to regular water logging.
Sources said, the businessmen and wholesale traders in port city commodity hubs Khatoonganj and Chaktai suffered heavy loses after their stocks were damaged by water congestion following heavy rains and the tidal waters.
Maximum areas of Khatunganj, Chaktai and neighboring Asadgonj, Korbaniganj and Rajakhali located on either side of the Chaktai canal were submerged in knee-deep to waist-deep water.
The logging of the water damaged large quantities of perishable commodities, including onions, garlic, rice, lentils, sugar, tea and spices after water flooded shops and warehouses at the wholesale markets.
The rain and flood water congestion forced traders to raise the height of the door still of both shops and warehouses in an effort to prevent water from coming in. However, even this was not enough as water managed to seep in through the walls.
