UNB, Dhaka :
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Tuesday said the first meeting under the Trade and Investment Cooperation Forum Agreement (Ticfa) between Dhaka and Washington will be held on April 27-28.
The minister confirmed it at a meeting with newly elected leaders of Economic Reporters’ Forum (ERF) at his secretariat office in the morning.
Commerce secretary Mahbub Ahmed, ERF president Sultan Mahmud, general secretary Sajjadur Rahman, vice president Syed Shah Nawaz Karim, assistant general secretary Rezaul Karim and Finance secretary Sheikh Abdullah
were, among others, present.
The maiden meeting of Ticfa was originally scheduled for April 7-8 but postponed as both sides-Bangladesh and the USA-did not find the schedule convenient due to other engagements.
Earlier on February 18, the US side confirmed the dates for the first council meeting of Ticfa on April 7-8 April during Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque’s US visit.
On November 25, Acting Deputy United States Trade Representative Wendy Cutler and Bangladesh Commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed signed the Ticfa in Washington on behalf of their respective sides.
Meanwhile, the US is planning to create a ‘Ticfa Working Group on GSP/Labour Affairs’ to provide an ongoing, formal mechanism for Bangladesh and US to address labour concerns as it envisions Ticfa as the key coordinating mechanism for bilateral, government-to-government efforts on the GSP Action Plan.
