Thakurgaon pre-polls violence leaves 5 injured

Five people were injured in a clash between the supporters of two mayoral candidates over the upcoming Ranisankail municipality elections at Rangpur Market in Ranisankail upazila on Wednesday night.
The injured were identified as Phulmia, 38, son of Abul Hossain, Azarul Islam, 65, son of Jamir Uddin, Belal Hossain, 35, Matiur, 45, son of Nazim Uddin and Samiran Begum, 35.
SM Zahid Iqbal, officer-in-charge of Ranisankail police station, said the supporters of Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Mostafizur Rahman went to Rangpur market area for electioneering in the evening.
As they started electioneering, the supporters of independent candidate Rafiul Islam obstructed them, triggering the fight. Five people were injured in the fierce battle.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The injured were taken to a local hospital.
