The teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions, who have been agitating for their inclusion into the Monthly Payment Order system, started hunger strike unto death from Monday morning.
About 300-400 teachers and employees of non-government educational institutions participated in the protest started from 9am on the street opposite to the National Press Club demanding inclusion of their institutions in MPO system.
Earlier, the protesters under the banner of “Non-MPO Educational Institutions’ Teachers and Employees Federation” announced the fast on Sunday as they observed work abstention in schools across the country for the second consecutive day.
Federation General Secretary Binoy Bhushan Roy said that despite remaining on the streets under open sky in scorching heat and heavy rains for 15 days, they could not see any step from the government. ‘So we have started fast unto death… until
our demand is met.’ The protesters also continued their indefinite work abstention in schools, said federation Senior Vice-President Shafiqul Islam.
The teachers are determined to take extra classes to make up the losses suffered for the movement, he said.
Earlier on June 22, they submitted a memorandum to the President, but the government did not take any initiative to meet their demand, he said adding that they will continue their hunger strike until fulfillment of their demand.
On June 10, they started demonstrations to press home their demand.
Thousands of teachers took to the streets several times in recent years to press home their demand for providing the MPO benefits to their institutions and nationalisation of many schools and colleges.
Aggrieved teachers resumed their protests on June 10 as the finance minister AMA Muhith, in his budget speech, was silent about inclusion of the institutions into the MPO system in line with a commitment made by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in January.
On December 31, 2017, teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions had started observing hunger strike unto death to press for their demand and ended the strike on January 5 last after getting Prime Minister’s assurance of meeting their demand.
As there is no specific budget allocation for the 2018-2019 fiscal year in this regard, they started their demonstrations for the second round.
The MPO system for recognised non-government educational institutions was introduced in 1981, under which the government has been paying 100 per cent basic pay to teachers since 2006.
The last inclusion of 1,624 institutions into the MPO system took place in 2010.
