A student in Chittagong may lose an eye after they were struck by a duster thrown by a teacher.
A Chittagong court ordered teacher Arif Billah to jail on Tuesday after a case was filed by the eighth grade student’s family. Billah teaches mathematics at the port city’s BEPZA Public School and College.
The victim, who was injured nine days ago, is still in hospital. According to the case documents, the chances of regaining sight in the injured eye are low. Billah was arrested soon after the case was filed on Monday, said EPZ Police Station Sub Inspector and case investigation officer Mohammad Sayem.
“On July 29, the student’s eye was grievously injured after the teacher struck it with a duster,” he told bdnews24.com. “The injury to the right eye is severe. Doctors say surgery is required and the possibility of regaining sight in the eye is low.” Other teachers and students at the school have also accused Billah of physical violence, the police official said. “The teacher is a vicious individual. We have learned that he would beat his students during classes.” The education ministry has forbidden the use of any form of corporal punishment at educational institutions.
