BSS, Dhaka :
Bangladesh Bank (BB) governor Dr Atiur Rahman on Monday directed the official concerned at the central bank to take punitive action against the Janata bank staff who were on duty to ensure the security of the vault at the bank’s Gazipur corporate branch.
Robbers on Saturday night looted Taka 61.78 lakh from the vault of the branch.
Addressing the bankers’ meeting at his office, the governor passed the directive to the officials concerned for taking action against wrong doing in the country’s banking sector. Deputy governors and executive directors of the central bank participated in the meeting.
The governor said it was apparent that there was lack of responsibilities by the staff of the banks who were responsible to ensure the security of the bank vault.
At the meeting, the governor also asked the bankers to take effective steps to reduce the rate of default and classified loans by driving loan recovery process.
He said interest rates were on declining trend though it had not come down to the expected level.
Pointing out that the average lending rate still remained at 12.49 percent, the governor said the rate could be slashed further by downsizing the spread (the gap between deposit and lending rates).
He also suggested the central bankers to improve governance, accountability, internal audit and risk management.
