Shifting of over bridge
At last the steel structure foot over bridge set on the Sylhet city’s Modhubon point area is being withdrawn to reset at the Humayun Rashid Chowdhury Square at the city’s Dakshin Surma area soon. Works on it would be started soon an official at the Sylhet City orporation (SCC) informed Wednesday. In the name of easing traffic congestion in the city’s busy area, it was set in July-August of 2015 and the finance minister AMA Muhith, also the lawmaker of Sylhet-1 constitiuency inaugurated formally on September 03. Setting the bridge at a busy and congested area was strongly opposed by the city dwellers as well as the traders of the city, but to no effect.
Ignoring the city dwellers’ protests, the SCC set it at a cost of Tk 16.6 million, while the overbridge was considered just waste having no use at all by common men. Newspapers, both local and national ones also carried stories in this regard.The steel structure gave no benefit for the pedestrians during the 2 years, rather it has caused much trouble for them, said a number of people like trader like Ataur Rahman of the Mohajon patty area alleged Tuesday.
People urged to leave hillside areas
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sylhet Rahat Anwar called upon the hill side people to shift from their hill side residence immediately.He said the monsoon rain is continuing for four consecutive days. There is high risk of landslide in Sylhet. “Therefore, all who are living in high risk at hill side areas should shift immediately.” Sources said, more than one lakh people are living at hill sides in Sylhet in high risk of lives due to landslide. Despite the measures of Sylhet District Administration, Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) and Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) to shift the people from hill side in the city in the current rainy season, the hill side dwellers returned to the area after stopping rains. Sylhet district administration is on high alert for landslide in Sylhet as the raining is continuing in recent days due to rough weather. The massive landslides may occur again at the hills of Sylhet any time during the raining. DC of Sylhet Rahat Anwar visited the hilly and hill side areas in the city for several times. Many people are living on the hills at illegal houses as well as many are at hill side areas illegally. He requested the people to leave the areas as landslide may occurred due to the heavy rain in the current season.
Jadukata River Bridge
 boosts dev in Sunamganj
The government has undertaken an initiative to build a bridge over the Jadukata River along the border with India in Tahirpur upazila of the district, at a cost of Tk 137 crore.
Local Government Office sources said the authorities concerned floated a tender for construction of a 750 meter long bridge over the river on Tuesday. The construction work of the bridge will start soon.The local people had long been raising a demand for a bridge over the Jadukata River to ease their travel. Once the bridge is built, the people of the district will get the benefit of connecting with the capital directly.
Besides, travellers can go to the tourist spots including Tanguar Haor, Barik Tila, Shimul Bagan, Jadukata River in a short time.Aftab Uddin, chairman of Badaghat Union, said “We are happy over the initiative and we want to implement it on time.”Kamruzzaman, chairman of Tahirpur Upazila, said the bridge would be an unprecedented boost to development of the communication sector in the area.
FM opens fountain
Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Saturday said that the cost of remittance transfer will be reduced soon to increase its flow to the country.The minister made the disclosure while talking to journalists after inaugurating the newly constructed fountain in Naiyorpul area of the city recently .The minister said that the tendency of settling aboard is increasing and it is the main reason of sending less money in the country.To increase remittance flow to country, the government will reduce remittance transfer fee from the next month, he said
Referring to deposits in Swiss Bank, Muhith said that black money is increasing in the country while the price of land is decreasing, that is the reason for deposits in Swiss Bank.
According to a report published by Bangladesh Bank, the remittance inflow into Bangladesh hit record lowest in last six years. The remittance has been decreased 14.46 percent than to last year.
