Improper drainage systems and uncoordinated cleaning process have made residents of the low-lying areas of Dhaka South City Corporation worried about possible water logging during the up-coming rainy season.
Drains in many areas of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) are filled with various kinds of garbage viz. polythene, plastic packets of different products, coconut shells, cricket balls and household waste.
The situation is worst at Doyagonj Bazaar under Jatrabari thana, Shakharinagar lane, Tonugonj lane, Mill Barracks and Alamganj under Sutrapur thana, Dhupkhola, Satis Sarkar Road, Baghabari and
Tekergoli under Gandaria thana, Jurain under Shyampur thana, Many area of Sabujbag, Khilgaon and Mugda Thana, Matuail and many areas under Demra thana and inside the DND embankment.
When contacted, the Chief Executive Officer of DSCC Khan Muhammad Bilal told The New Nation, “Our Zonal officials are responsible for cleaning the drains regularly. If they do not work, they will be liable to official action.”
About uncoordinated work with Dhaka WASA, he said, “We are trying to coordinate with them.”
Locals said, land grabbers captured the three canals inside the DND embankment many days ago. Residential buildings, mills and industries have been built. These obstruct pumping out of rainwater. In this circumstances people living here fear untold sufferings during the coming monsoon.
Rafiqul Azad, a resident, expressed his anxiety by saying, “We are really afraid of the consequence of the coming monsoon. The area went under rainwater for several years and we, as such, demand reform of the drainage systems and installation of more machines to pump out water.
However, Dhaka WASA was seen to clean some of the sewerage lines in these areas. If the authority of City Corporation does not make it clean, it will be a serious cause of water logging in upcoming monsoon.”
“When the Dhaka WASA is actively cleaning the sewerage lines, then the City Corporation sits idle. If they work together, then the city dwellers will be relieved from the sufferings of water logging in the rainy season,” said Humayun Kabir, resident of Gandaria.
A shop owner of Doyagonj Bazaar also expressed his anxiety. “If the city corporation does not clean the drains, then the total area will plunge into the by rainwater.
Meanwhile the residents of Sabujbag thana said, the drains of the area remain unclean round the year. “Whenever there rains, the drains overflow. It causes untold sufferings to the school going kids, but the authority feels nothing,” said Nurul Islam, one of the residents of the area.
Similarly most of the drains in the Mugda thana area are also filled with dirt. A resident, Muhammad Ali, said we become victims of discrimination of the City Corporation. “We suffer from flood and water logging always, but the City Corporation does nothing to save us from the unbearable situations,” said Faysal Ahmed of the area.
“If the drainage system is improved and maintained properly, the residents will be safe from distress,” he said.
