Sylhet Bureau :
Protesting students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet brought out a symbolic ‘coffin procession’ on the campus on Saturday demanding the resignation of their vice-chancellor Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed.
The procession started from Golchattar at 3.00 pm with the participation of several hundred students and then marched around the university campus.
At that time, the agitating students said, “Our one point demand is vice-chancellor’s resignation. Twenty-four students went on a hunger strike at 3.00pm on January 20 with this demand. After about 72 hours, our demand is not met yet.”
“The health conditions of our fellow protestors are deteriorating and they are slowly moving toward death. We cannot in any way push them to death alone. No matter what the situation, we will not move from the platform of the movement until this one point demand of ours is realized.”
They further said if even one of them dies for this vice-chancellor then they are all ready for death and VC will take responsibility for this death.
Meanwhile, the condition of the students on hunger strike is not good; most of them are in critical condition. Doctors have advised some students to break their fast as their health is deteriorating. So far, a total of 16 critically ill students have been admitted to three hospitals in Sylhet.
Besides, the condition of the seven protestors who are continuing strike in front of the VC’s residence bus is also not good.
