Student bodies observe education day at DU

Different student bodies observed the historic Education Day in befitting manners on Friday with a call to introduce a scientific and uniform education system for all in the country.
Making the day, the programs started around 8am with the placing of floral wreaths at the Shikkha Odhikar Chattar monument near the Supreme Court compound.
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Socialist Students’ Front, Ganatantrik Chattra Council and other organisations placed wreaths at the monument.
The day was observed to commemorate the sacrifice of students Mostafa, Babul and Wajiullah, who were killed in police shooting while staging a demonstration against the SM Sharif Education Commission formed in 1962.
Since then, students and teachers have been observing September 17 as Education Day, demanding a scientific, single-stream, and secular education system in the country.
However, Ganatantrik Chattra Council organized a discussion programme after holding a rally in the campus.
Bangladesh Student Union staged their discussion program t the foot of the anti-terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture with the presence of Jahangirnagar University Economics Prof Anu Muhammad.
“Today the education system of the country has reached at that stage where the education was remained in 1962. The current education is being commercialized rather than the welfare of all the students,” Prof Anu Muhammad said.
Besides, BCL Bijay Ekatar Hall unit of DU organized a education conference making the day at Hall auditorium titled ‘Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasina: A unique tradition in ensuring the right to education’ while 40 students of the Hall have received ‘Sheikh Hasina Digital Skill Development Scholarship’.
