Rickshaw Van Shramik Union on Sunday called on the government to take immediate steps to stop repressions of the police on rickshaw pullers during the restrictions imposed on public movement to contain Covid-19 infection.
The union leaders and activists came up with the demand at a rickshaw procession in Dhaka.
Several hundred rickshaw pullers brought out the protest procession from Purana Paltan crossing
without passengers at about 12:00pm.
It ended in front of the National Press Club and held a short procession where president of the organisation Farhad Kha chaired.
Garment labour leader and advisor to the union Joly Talukder said that government did not give any food and cash aid for the rickshaw and van pullers during the ‘lockdown’ started from April 5, and they compelled to pull their rickshaws to run their families.
But the police had run repressions on the rickshaw pullers in different parts of Dhaka city, Joly said.
She called on the government to give food and cash aid for the urban poor and rickshaw pullers during the ‘lockdown’.
General secretary of the union Abdul Qudus, labour leaders Akter Hossain, Hasan Ahmed Babul, among others, spoke at the rally.
