Stocks rally on finance issue in post-holiday return

Dhaka stocks surged in early Sunday trade and maintained the rally till the close, as investors returned from a nine-day holiday to find the financial stocks lucrative for comfortable positioning.
The stock market went for an extended holiday from October 5 to celebrate Eid-ul Azha.
Maintaining strong gain for the sixth week, the benchmark price index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) jumped by 96.31 points to 5334.03, which was a new high for the index. The 96.31 points gain in a single day in the DSEX was the highest for this year.
The blue-chip DS30 and Shariah DSES also finished up at 1998.69 and 1234.32 accordingly.
Financial stocks appeared to have led the day at the new peak when return from banking stocks and NBFIs was 5.2 percent and 1.8 percent respectively.
“NBFIs are capitalizing on their declining cost of funds and improved economic conditions,” Lanka Bangla Securities Limited (LBSL) said in its daily market update adding that the cost of funds for NBFIs dropped nearly by 13 percent during July 2013-July 2014 period.
Among the other sectoral move, textile gained by 2.66 percent, fuel and power by 1.1 percent and pharmaceuticals by nearly 1.0 percent.
