RAB has arrested six people from different areas of Gopalganj, suspecting them involved with a sensational incident of gang-rape in Gopalganj Sadar.
This information was stated by RAB Legal and Media Wing Commander Khandaker Al Moin in a press conference at RAB Media Center in Kawranbazar yesterday afternoon.
The accused are Rakib Mia, Pias Fakir, Prodeep Biswas, Nahid Raihan, Md Helal and Turjo Mohanto. They all are professional criminals.
According to RAB official, the accused, who hailed from Gopalganj and adjacent areas, are members of a local criminal gang led by Rakib Mia.
Earlier, a student of a public university in Gopalganj had been gang-raped. On the night of February 23, two students, including the victim, were walking in front of the Nabinbagh helipad in Gopalganj Sadar when some miscreants got into an argument by asking for their names and
addresses. At one stage, the student was forcibly taken to a local building and raped in turn.
All accused used to commit various offences, including taking drugs, gambling, stealing, and mugging for the last 10 years and often stalked school and college girls, Khondaker Al Moyeen added.
Multiples cases had already been filed against them with the police station, he also said.
After this heinous incident, university students blocked the Dhaka-Khulna highway in protest. Students from other universities in the country also demanded that those involved in this heinous incident be brought to justice as soon as possible.
Following the incident, the BSMRSTU proctor filed a case under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act at Gopalganj Sadar Police Station accusing the unidentified persons. He said that in the wake of this incident, the intelligence branch of RAB headquarters and the operation of RAB-8 conducted raids at different places in Gopalganj on February 25 and arrested 6 people involved.
