Ship making business spreads widely at Nesarabad

The business of making ships is spreading rapidly at Nesarabad upazila in the district every year.
People related with making ships said that around thirty years back a Jahangir Munshi in the upazila started the business at Nesarabad and next three dockyards were set up there.
As the business is profitable the number of dockyard began to increase every year and now there are twelve dockyards. Among them eight dockyards are registered under customs, excise and vat office in Pirojpur, said the office sources.
Makers of these ships said that at the village of Panchabeki, Bairula, Borchakathi, Sarchina and some other places different kinds of ships are made. As many big canals are flowed through these village and they are connected with the wide river Sandha, the area is vary favorable for ship making business.
Around ten categories of different sizes iron trawler, sand carrying cargo and big sizes ships length from 30 to 160 feet are made at these dockyards.
To complete a ship, workers from five categories have to work like wielding, coloring, grinding and fitting machine, said workers.
People from different area in the district and adjacent Barisal, Barguna, Patuakhali district, even, Dhaka come to Nesarabad to make ship.
As a result working opportunity has been created for over one thousand of unemployed youths there.
“Over one thousand workers work at different dockyards in the upazila and a laborer get TK 260 as wage for a day and a mechanic gets TK 350,” said Limon, a worker of a dockyard at Borchakathi village in the upazila.
Workers also said that it takes 8-9 months to complete the work of a big size ship and last year 6-7 big size ships were made in the upazila.
Other hand every month they can make at least ten small size iron boats run by engine.
But there has no certified engineer at the dockyards.
“From our practical experience, we run our ship making work,” said Md Shamsul Haque, 55, an engine fitter at a dockyard in the upazila.
“I am working over thirty years in the dockyard,” he said adding that he has no institutional knowledge about ship making.
Like him all the mechanic has no educational training. So dockyard owners demanded to the government to keep good eyes on them so that they can get technical support from the government.
“For the last fifteen years, the business of ship making has gained popularity in our area and is spreading every year. So government help like giving loan and technical support is needed to develop the business,” said Md Mohiuddin, an owner of a dockyard in the upazila.
“We have no instruction how to run the business, even, no license, said Md Asaduzzaman, organizing secretary of Nesarabad Dockyard Association in the upazila.
