Ship-breaking Workers Trade Union Forum places 10- point demands

Sixteen workers died in the accident in the ship breaking yard in eight months of this year.
The Ship-Breaking Workers Trade Union Forum released the information at a press conference at Chittagong Press Club on Wednesday afternoon.
At the press conference, the organization made a five-point demand to tackle workers’ casualties and create safe working conditions in ship breaking yards. Strict action will be announced if the demands are not met within seven days. Shafar Ali, Joint Convener of the organization, read out the written statement. The convener of the organization was Tapan Datta and Joint Convener AM Nazim Uddin.
The demands of the ship breaking workers are in 10-point demand, compensation of Taka 15 lakh to the family of the deceased worker and Tk 10 lakh to the injured, to provide personal security equipment to the workers of the yard owners, to save the workers’ database, to completely free the ship from dangerous goods before cutting, the minimum monthly wages of the workers. Ensure Tk 16000 per Month as Minimum wages and arrange to investigate of all accidents so far and take action against the responsible for this workers’ casualties
Due to lack of safe working conditions in the factories, the workers are constantly being subjected to accidents.
 In the last three and a half years, 66 workers have lost their lives in various accidents. In the past 2016 to 2018 about 50 people died in three years they claimed. In the last eight months of this year16 people have been died and 30 workers were seriously injured.
Of those killed this year, five died after being burned in flames and gases while cutting a ship, and five died when an iron plate was drown to them.
Convener Shafar Ali said, “There are more than 150 ship breaking yards registered on the coast of the Bay of Bengal in Sitakunda, Chittagong. But the work is going on in 50-60 yards. About 25,000 workers work directly in these Ship breaking Yard. About 60,000 workers are indirectly associated with the industry he added.
“According to the labor law, the family of the slain worker is given Tk 2 lakh and the Crisis Committee decision made by the Deputy commissioner more 5 lakh taka is to be paid,” the owners is not abide by properly he added.
