Shabnam’s debut movie released 62 years ago on Christmas Day

Legendary actress Shabnam has already crossed six decades of her acting career in the silver screen. In 1959, on December 25, the Christmas Day, Shabnam first acted in role of a dancer out of four in Ehtesham directed movie E Desh Tomar Aamar. In the film, Shabnam performed with the song titled Elore Elo Swadhinata. Later, Shabnam acted in Ehtesham’s movie Rajdhanir Buke. But as a heroine, she first acted in Mustafiz directed movie Harano Din where Rahman was her hero. Now music-lovers can watch the movie on YouTube channel of Anupam.
Shabnam and Rahman was first successful pair in the country’s silver screen. In her long time acting career, Shabnam acted in 200 Urdu movies and 20 Bangladeshi movies. Jhorna Boshak was her original name. Basically she was a dancer.
Born on August 17 in 1943, this correspondent talked with this legendary actress at her residence in the capital’s Baridhara Diplomatic Zone on Monday. Shabnam was most reliable actress in Pakistani films. In 1962, she first acted opposite Rahman in Ehtesham’s Urdu movie Chanda. By this movie she came into limelight. Later, she acted in many Urdu movies. From 1971 she got the Pakistan’s highest state honour, Nigar Award for 13 years in a row. In Bangladesh, after Harano Din, she stopped to acting. Later, keeping request from Khan Ataur Rahman, she again started acting through Raja Sanyasi. Then she acted in some movies including Nacher Putul, Nachghor, Karon, Julie, Shorto, Sondhi, etc. In 1998, she last acted in Kazi Hayat’s movie Ammajan.
While talking about her career in big screen Shabnam said, “Loves and respect from the viewers are my great achievement in my acting career. I started acting in movie 62 years ago. I cannot realise how times flied. During this time I lost my parents and husband Robin. Only son Roni is with me now. Everybody prays for me.”
