Khulna city dwellers have been facing serious water crisis for about two months. Khulna WASA is providing only half of the demand of water. No progress only half of the demand of water. No progress for implementing water project was found still. 16 lakh people of Khulna, as a result, are facing acute both drinking and using water crisis.
Environmentalists said, due to closing pond and watery places and aquifers, water crisis has made a severe.
Concerned sources said, there is 24 crore litters of water demand per day for 16 lakh Khulna city dwellers while WASA is supplying only 12 crore litres of water daily. As a result Khulna inhabitants are depriving of getting water as they need. Some house owners arrange to lift water boring deep tube wells. But as the ground water level is depleting, deep tube wells can’t work well. Without getting any other alternative some people are purchasing water form WASA at the cost of Tk. 500 to 1000 as per distance. Many of the city dwellers could not able to collect water from wasa even they are agree to pay Taka because wasa is not in a position to provide sufficient water as per demand.
WASA sources said, a water supply project of Tk. 2500 crore was taken in 2011 which is scheduled to be completed with in 2017. But there is apprehension regarding this. Because no work order was given ever in there years. ADB and ZAICA allocated finance for the project. If the project is completed at least 11 crore liters of water could be raised from the river Modhumoti and water crisis would be reduced to some exten, sources added.
The water level has depleted at 30 feet below then the normal. Water supply from wasa is not possible properly. As a result Khulna inhabitants are suffering from acute water crisis for the last two months. Particularly the women folk house wives, service holders have to wait for water round the clock.
Nargis Begum, 32 of city’s tootpara area told this correspondent that she has to wait for supply water giving up all her household works even. She couldn’t sleep well for the tension of water.
Taslima Akter, 30, a house wife of city’s Boshupara area said, water come from wasa pipe lines is full of wastes which are not useable.
Shamim, 25, an MBA student of Sonadanga residential area said, we couldn’t take both regularly due to lack of water.
Abul Fazal, 50, a Service holder of Moylapota area said, due to want of water we are Suffering in respect of our household works including taking bath and we’re also in troubles regarding drinking water.
Sonia, 26, a college Student said, we can’t take bath regularly and cook properly due to lack of water.
