Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) of Daffodil International University (DIU) organized a seminar on ‘Fake News: Identifying, Defining and Fighting’ on Monday at Banquet Hall of the university. Prof Regina Valutyte, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of Mykolas Romeris University, Lithuania present at the program as the keynote speaker.
Nayeemul Islam Khan, renowned journalist and Chief Editor of Our Time and Rahul Raha, Head of News, News24 was present as the discussant. Besides, Prof Dr SM Mahbub Ul Haque Majumder, Pro Vice Chancellor, DIU, Prof Dr Fokhrey Hossain, Director of International Affairs, Saleem Ahmed, Associate Professor and Head, Department of JMC, Dr Sheikh Mohammad Shafiul Islam, Associate Professor of JMC, distinguished Deans and Head of the Departments were also present at the seminar. Prof Regina Valutyte presented a keynote paper titled ‘Fake news: Identifying, Defining and Fighting’ on the seminar. While presenting the paper she said that the tendency of fake news is rising alarmingly around the whole world. And it is spreading radically through the online and social media.
She told a result of a Canadian survey which identifying that 86 percent people read news through online and 74pc people read news through social media. So the spreading rate of fake news through social media is increasing alarmingly.
In the meantime Prof Regina Valutyte gave example of the US President Donald Trump that how he was spread fake news during the election period. She said, fake news create a huge disarray into the society. So we have to apply law to prevent fake news. Nayeemul Islam Khan said that the topic of fake news is very time befitting in this present situation. Because of few days and few months ago we saw the abuse of fake news like salt price, onion price, Nasirnagar, Ramu, Bhola occurrence. This all were happed through social media. So we have to aware about social media and fake news.
Rahul Raha said that fake news was alive in our society from long ago. Nowadays technology is helping to provide fake news rapidly. So we should care about it and trained up our people how to use and respond in social media.
