Scholarships awarded to heirs of Muktijoddhas

The High Commission of India and Muktijuddho Academy organized a scholarship distribution programme at Bangladesh National Museum on Wednesday where scholarship cheques were handed over to the descendents of the Muktijodhas.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, MP was the chief guest at the function while Minister of State for Water Resources Lt Colonel (retired) Muhammad Nazrul Islam, Bir Protik, MP was present. The ceremony was attended by a large number of Muktijodhas and other dignitaries. The Muktijodha scholarship scheme was started by Govt of India in 2006 for the descendents of Muktijodhas.
Speaking on the occasion the High Commissioner of India said, ‘our relationship is rooted in the strong foundation of common heritage, history and geography. Our support for the Liberation of Bangladesh and our shared commitment to the ideals of democracy and humanitarian values make us partners in a rapidly changing world. We attach the highest importance to our friendship with Bangladesh and will work to preserve and strengthen this bond so that our relationship rises to and reflects the aspirations of our people.’
The scholarships are awarded to higher secondary and undergraduate students. An undergraduate student gets Taka 24,000 /- per year for four years and higher secondary student get Taka 10,000 per year for two years. Till date 10,336 students have benefited and more than 15 crores Taka has been disbursed to these students. Students are selected based on merit from each division.
The ceremony at National museum, Dhaka would be followed by similar ceremonies at Sylhet, Chittagong, Barisal, Khulna, Rangpur and Rajshahi over the next few weeks.
