SC asks Brac to pay Tk 404 cr in unpaid tax

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the authorities concerned of Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (Brac) to pay Tk 404 crore to the government as unpaid income tax. A five-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order. Earlier, the High Court exempted Brac from giving taxes after announcing it a public welfare institution on December 14, 2014. Later, the Commissioner of Tax, Dhaka, filed 11 petitions against the HC order. Barrister Rokon Uddin Mahmud and Advocate Mohammad Asaduzzaman stood for Brac, while Deputy Attorney General Advocate Rashed Jahangir Shubhro represented the state. The Commissioner of Tax demanded Tk 404.20 crore tax from Brac for 11 fiscal years from 1993-2012. –Dhaka, Aug 3 (UNB)
