UNB, Dhaka :Communist Party of Bangladesh(CPB) and Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) have announced “‘Save Sundarbans March’ programme from October 13-17 to raise awareness against all environmentally destructive activities in the world’s largest mangrove forest, also home to famous Royal Bengal Tiger.This was officially announced at a joint press conference organized by CPB and BSD in the capital on Wednesday.According to the announcement, the march will commence through a rally in front of the Press Club in the city on October 13 and will end at the closing rally in Bagerhat district on October 17.CPB chairman Mujahidul Islam Selim demanded cancellation of all environmentally destructive projects in the Sundarbans, including the controversial Rampal power plant project.Selim said, “Sheikh Hasina has recently received the Champion of the Earth award. We hope she will take every measure to protect the environmental sanctity of the Sundarbans.” He invited government officials to take part in an open debate regarding this issue and leave the final decision on the hands of the mass people.BSD general secretary Khalekuzzaman said, “If Rampal project goes ahead, then it will affect local peoples’ lives in the forest area. There are corruption allegations regarding land acquisition for the project.”The CBP, BSD leaders also called upon people to participate in the “Save Sundarbans March” event to make it a a success.
