Bangladesh had a total of 14.32 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas reserves until March – the latest figure available.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid Bipu gave the figure in Parliament on Monday.
Bipu was answering a query by ruling party lawmaker Md Mamunur Rashid Kiran.
The state minister said 20 gas fields out of 26 were currently in production.
“The initial reserves of the discovered gas fields were 27.12 TCF. Some 12.80 TCF has been used in different sectors until this March, taking the reserves to almost 14.32 TCF,” he said.
“The government has taken initiatives to drill in the six fields discovered during its tenure.”
He said gas had been found in Sundalpur, Sreekail, and Rupganj.
He said, “Sundalpur and Seekail have a total reserve of 196.14 billion cubic feet.
“Per day, 4.2 mmcf (million cubic feet) of gas is extracted from Sundalpur and 40 mmcf from Sreekail.”
He hoped the Rupganj field would soon begin production.
The Begumganj gas field has been producing nearly 4.5 mmcf gas daily since March.
The country’s daily production was raised by 956 mmcfd to 2,700 after the Awami league-led government assumed office in 2009, he said.
