UNB, Satkhira :
The residents of Satkhira still have to bear the brunt of the aftermath of Aila as the day, May 25, revisits for seventh time rekindling the horrifying memories of the destructive cyclonic storm that ripped through the south-western coast.
Still bearing the testimony to the storm that hit the region on this day in 2009, causing colossal damage to the infrastructures, the district is yet to see the normal flow of life.
Packing winds of up to 90km per hour, the storm wreaked havoc in Khulna, Satkhira, Patuakhali, Bagerhat, Barisal, Barguna, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Laxmipur, Jessore and Bhola.
Thousands of people became homeless as tidal waves leaping up to 15 feet high rolled into the coastal areas.
The waves damaged river and flood-control embankments and dykes, submerging many villages in Khulna, Satkhira, Patuakhali and Barisal. The squally waves during the storm uprooted thousands of trees, washed away crops on vast tracts of land and damaged miles of roads and highways of the coastal areas, leaving thousands of people of unemployed. Besides, the cyclone left behind a large number of problems, including scarcity of pure drinking water, river erosion and illiteracy.
Although the government has taken several steps to reduce unemployment, poverty and illiteracy, the attempts are not so much to meet the demand of the residents of these areas.
Residents of the areas are suffering from various diseases due to the scarcity of pure drinking water. People leaving in the Aila-affected areas are still in search of employment. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Shamnagar upazila of Satkhira district Abu Sayed M Manjurul Alam said several community clinics were set up in the upazila after the cyclone.
However, they cannot operate those due to lack of skilled manpower.
