A 15-kilometre long tailback was created on the Dhaka-Tangail highway from Gazipur’s Chandra to Tangail’s Konabari on Saturday morning due to construction works on the road and sporadic rain.
People got stuck for hours on the highway for hours as construction works on a four-lane road and a bridge are underway in Konabari and Chandra, Mobarak Hossain, Inspector of Konabari Police Outpost, told our Gazipur correspondent.
Hundreds of vehicles were moving slowly due to the construction works there, Mobarak said.
Tahmina Begum, a passenger, said she along with their children started from Tangail at night, but still stuck in jam at 11am. Her children are in immense sufferings.
Shamim Ahmed, a banker, said, “The jam is not a new problem for us. It is almost a daily phenomenon, which is very much undesirable.”
He also blamed the traffic mismanagement and delay in road construction for the tailback and sufferings of the people.
Khalek Mia, a covered-van driver of Tangail-bound Himel Enterprise said that he experienced the jam when he was in Chourasta area of Gazipur and it took almost two hours to reach Chandra from there.
Habib, driver of Jony Enterprise, said it took almost three hours to reach Chandra from Vogra Bypass area.
Meanwhile, an eight-kilometre traffic jam was created on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Comilla’s Daudkandi upazila since morning.
It took five hours to reach Meghna-Gumti bridge toll plaza from Kanra in the upazila, said Kabir Mia, driver of a bus owned by Seba Paribahan.
