The Satkhira judge, who is accused of torturing his 10-year-old housemaid, has been stripped of his judicial powers.
Satkhira’s Chief Judicial Magistrate Nitai Chandra Saha said on Thursday that Senior Judicial Magistrate Nurul Islam’s judicial authority was withdrawn temporarily. The move to take away his authority to judge cases was taken on orders from the higher authorities, he said.
Saha said the law secretary and other related departments were informed of the rescue of the child from Islam’s house. Islam was not allowed to conduct judicial activities on Thursday, he said.
On Wednesday, police rescued the girl from Islam’s house at Polashpole in the town. Several marks of wounds were seen on her body and she was admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.
Neighbours said Islam and his wife ‘Natasha’ often tortured the girl and did not let them talk to her when she cried. Satkhira Sadar Hospital’s physician Dr Farhad Jamil said a three-member medical board was formed to treat the victim. He said they found marks of injuries inflicted only a few days ago. Locals staged a human-chain protest in the town on Thursday morning against the alleged torture.
