RU Correspondent :
Students of Rajshahi University (RU) have been facing massive seat crisis for many years comparing to students in different academic sessions.
Even the problem is accelerating day by day as no effective step is being taken to build extra dormitories for the students to solve the crisis considering the interest of the students.
Campus sources said, around 37,500 students are currently enrolled in the university. Of the total students, 5,216 males and 3,609 females, reside in 17 dormitories of the university.
No significant development work has taken place for a long time at the varsity dormitories. Unhygienic foods are being served continuously. Shortage of seats in the reading room is also hampering regular academic activities of the students, they alleged.
It is further alleged that students are not getting their seats in the dormitories for long time even after getting the seats through allotment
by the hall authorities. Besides, a huge number of seats are under the control of non-resident students, they claimed. But the hall authorities are not taking any effective measures against such illegal occupation of the hall seats.
Many students are unable to get a seat after paying hall rent for long. General students are offended at such a silent role of the university authorities.
Students of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) of the university are also suffering from residential problems as there is no dormitory for those students. The Institution was given a separate academic building four years ago.
A non-resident student said, “I have been facing viva every year for a seat in my dormitory since first year, but no seat was allotted for me so far. But many of my friends got seat as they joined the student politics.”
Convenor of RU hall provost council Professor Dr Abdul Alim said, “We informed the Vice Chancellor about these problems and he assured that necessary steps will be taken soon’.
Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university Professor Dr. Chowdhury Muhammad Zakaria said, ‘It is very painful for a student not to get a seat in the dormitory even after paying seat rent for a long time. No one informed me about the irregularities in case of allocating seat.”
“However, proper steps will be taken if the hall authorities inform us,’ he added.
RU Vice Chancellor Professor M Abdus Sobhan was not available for comments when called him over the phone.
