Staff Reporter :
Readymade garment (RMG) workers demonstrated in Gazipur and blocked a road demanding their arrears and salaries and Eid bonus on Wednesday morning.
The workers and staff of the Style Craft garments factory have been demanding payment of their arrears for the last few months and organised protests in front of the factory several times, including Tuesday.
The authorities on Tuesday were given an ultimatum to pay by the evening, but they did nothing.
According to locals, the workers came to the factory at 8am and started protesting without joining work.
They blocked the Dhaka-Joydebpur Highway around 10am which resulted in a gridlock of goods laden vehicles on both sides of the highway.
Additional police have been deployed in the factory area to avoid any unpleasant situation, Samir Chandra Sutradhar, inspector of Gazipur Industrial Police, told the media.

The Style Craft factory has around 750 staff and 5,000 workers.
Chameli, a worker of the factory, said: “We don’t need new dates or promises. We need our salaries.”
The workers of Style Craft had to stage a demonstration to get their salary and bonus ahead of last year’s Eid-ul-Fitr.
According to sources, the company regularly delays clearing the salaries of their workers.
The factory is yet to pay the workers three months’ salaries of the current year and four months of the previous two years, they added.
