RMG workers’ demo for arrears at Badda

The workers of a ready-made garments (RMG) factory staged demonstration at North Badda in the city demanding payment of their arrear salaries on Wednesday morning.
The agitating workers also blocked the Rampura-Badda Road disrupting traffic for more than two hours.
Police said, the workers of Tuba Garments factory took to the streets at around 9:50am demanding their outstanding wages of two months and overtime. They also blocked the Rampura-Badda road halting traffic movement that created a tailback.
On information, police rushed to the spot and dispersed the workers that triggered to a chase and counter chase.
At one stage, the angry workers started throwing brickbats at police and vandalizing windowpanes of nearby building forcing the law enforcers to lob tear-gas shells and use water cannon to disperse them.
Officer-in-Charge of Badda Thana MA Jalil told The New Nation that more than 1500 workers of Tuba Garments took to the street in the morning protesting non-payment of their arrear salaries.
“The authorities of the factory earlier announced that the workers would be paid two month’s outstanding salaries in the morning,” he said, adding, when they came to know that their due wages would not be paid on the day they became angry and came out from the factory.
Later, they started demonstration by blocking Rampura-Badda road for two hours.
On information, police rushed the spot and dispersed the angry workers from the road. “We had to lob tear-gas shell and water cannon to disperse the workers,” he added.  
He also said, additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
