RMG owners urged to help workers

Bangladesh Journalists’ Foundation for Consumers and Investors (BJFCI), the non-profit platform of the senior journalists of leading dailies and media has urged the BGMEA to take steps to disburse salary among the garment workers.
BJFCI gave this call in a meeting of the Foundation’s Standing Committee held on Wednesday following the circular of Bangladesh Bank that implies garment workers to pay Tk 4.00 as fee for each Tk 1000 transaction, while banks will pay Tk 4.00 as a support. Chaired by BJFCI Chairman Faruk Ahmed, Executive Editor of The Financial Herald, the meeting was participated online by the committee members namely Shiabur Rahman (Executive Editor, The Bangladesh Post), Shamim Ara (Managing Editor, The Bangladesh Express), Syed Ali Asfar (Chief Sub-Editor, The Financial Express), PR Biswas (Senior Reporter, The Asian Age) and Dr. Farhan Ishrak Ahmed.
The meeting observed that nearly Taka 40 billion (4000 crore) would be disbursed among 4.1 million (41 lakh) garment workers through mobile banking channels thanks to the government’s allocations of Tk 5000 crore for the factory owners. Garment workers will have to pay cash as fee to mobile banking agents across the country, who are also poor people and now facing hardship like garment workers due to coronavirus pandemic.
