River bank protection work along the Brahmaputra River at Singria area under Fulchhari upazila in the district started on Wednesday amid much enthusiasm.
Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangshad Advocate Fazley Rabbi Miah formally inaugurated the work by dumping geo textile sand bags at the vulnerable site as chief guest.
Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) is implementing the work under its emergency programme, official said.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazley Rabbi Miah said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken up a plan to construct a flood control embankment along the right bank of the river from Bangabandhu Bridge to Teesta Bridge through Gaibandha district.
The embankment would be constructed at a cost of Tk 3,500 crore with the financial support of World Bank to protect the areas from the river erosion permanently, he said.
