Syed Shemul Parvez :
Death procession is increasing in the capital and one after another accident is taking place which is appalling the dwellers every day.
Sources said that more than two hundred people lost their lives in city road crashes in 2020.
Experts said, the number of accidents is increasing in those places where the roads are made narrow and U loop system is introduced in the capital to reduce traffic congestion.
On January 27, an employee of private television channel Ekattor TV was killed in a tragic road crash when a passenger bus knocked down him with the motorcycle near Baridhara’s Narda area in the city.
The victim was identified as Gopal Sutrodhar, 34. He was a video editor of the television channel. Earlier on January 18, a couple named Akash-Mitu was killed in a tragic road crash when they were going to Banani by a motorcycle to work as usual.
At that time a passenger bus of Azmeri Paribahan ran over them from behind near a uloop. In the blink of an eye, their four-year-old daughter became an orphan.
Victim Akash was an employee of a private company and Mitu used to work for a hotel.
This unfortunate death is occurring every day on the city roads. About 15 people died on the airport road in the last three months.
Airport Road is a 8-lane road, each being 3.65 meters. The eight-lane became 6 lanes near the U loop.
There is a huge difference in the speed of these two vehicles which are being added to the main road using U loop and which are running on the main road directly.
Besides, those who walk and are supposed to drive directly do not follow the rule.
Communication expert, Professor Dr M Shamsul Haque said, U loop system is not applicable in the case of narrow roads. The system of U loop has to be given where the roads are much wider.
It should be ensured where the number of straight roads is more and the number of turns is less, expert added.
Another dangerous spot of the accident in the city is the 4.1 km long Mayor Hanif Flyover. Deaths often occur here, sources said.
According to ARI, the agency investigating the cause of the road accident, 7,916 people have died in 7,001 accidents in the last two years. The financial loss is Taka around 44 thousand 264 crore.
However, the Department of Roads and Highways suggested about job-based recruitment of drivers out of more trips, more money policy.
