Staff Reporter :
The cabinet committee on law and order has expressed grave concern over the increasing incidents of extortion by using cell phones with fake caller IDs in the recent days.
In this backdrop, the committee asked the mobile phone operators to work in coordination with the law enforcing agencies in a bid to take necessary steps to prevent toll collection through phone calls.
The above recommendation of cabinet committee came at a meeting chaired by Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu on Thursday.
Officials said that the committee also asked the country’s mobile phone operators not to issue SIM cards to those, who submit incomplete or fake documents.
The cabinet committee expressed deep concern over extortion at a time when extortion by the mafioso has increased in the last couple of days, mainly targeting the upcoming Eid-ul Azha and Durga Puja festivals, the officials added.
The listed “top terrors” who went into hiding in the face of crackdown by the police and Rapid Action Battalion [RAB] have become active again in taking toll, particularly from businessmen, in the city, a sources in the intelligence agency said.
Most of the top terrors in Dhaka’s underworld, including Shahadat, Jishan, Subrato Bain and Bikas, have taken shelter in different foreign countries.
But these wanted criminals and their sidekicks are exacting toll from businessmen, garment owners and influential persons with threats by phone calls and hand-written letters.
In most of the cases, people are forced to pay them toll as demanded, according to the source.
