“Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day” was observed in different districts as elsewhere in the country on Wednesday with due respect and in a befitting manner, paying rich tributes to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement of 1952.
Various political parties and socio-cultural and volunteer organisations and educational institutions observed the day with a renewed pledge for building a happy, prosperous and non-communal Bangladesh. Our correspondents and agencies reports:
Barisal Correspondent reports: Ekushey February, the language martyrs and International Mother Language Day, was observed with due respect in Barisal on Wednesday.
Thousands of barefooted people including law makers, BCC Mayor, high officials of the divisional, district, police administration, Barisal Reporters Unity, Girl Guides Association, leaders and representatives of more than 350 socio-cultural-political-educational -religious, government and non government, voluntary organizations wearing black badges paid tribute to the martyrs of the language movement of 1952 by placing floral wreath at the alter of the Central Shaheed Minar of the city from Wednesday early hours to late morning.
Black and half mast national flags were hoisted on every house-top.
Discussion meetings, cultural functions, painting, hand writing competitions, were held by different organizations including district and divisional administration, Charukala, Shishu Academy throughout the day on this occasion.
Barisal Reporters Unity organized a two-day long exhibition on books, photos, documents on history and development of Bangla language, movement for state language, copies of rare Bangla books, books of prominent local writers including Bijoy Gupta, Jibanananda Das etc. at Central Shaheed Minar of the city inaugurated by Habibur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Barisal on Tuesday.
On this occasion four-day long programs of discussion meetings, recitations, cultural functions, dramas were held at Barisal Central Shaheed Minar, organized by Barisal Sangskritik Sangothan Samonnya Parishad, an alliance of 26 cultural organizations of the city, and hundreds of spectators enjoyed the programs from every afternoon to late night.
Special prayers were held at different religious prayer places and organizations for the blessings of the departed souls of the martyrs of the language movement and liberation war and welfare of the country and nation.  
Bagearhat Correspondent reports: “Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day-2018 (February-21” was celebrate in Bagerhat district town and its all the nine Upazilas in a befitting manner in commemorating the Language Heroes of 1952.  
On this day in 1952, Barkat, Salam, Rafiq, Saifur and Jobbar made their sublime sacrifice in support of making Bangla as a state Language of the then Pakistan. The Language Movement inspired the people to fight against injustice and economic exploitation of a reign of another.
In recognition of the Language Movement in Bangladesh UNESCO declared 21st February as International Mother Language Day to promote linguistic and cultural diversity in the UN member-states. The declaration came on November 17, 1999. A total 188 countries across the world observed the day with the commitment to promote linguistic diversity and multilingual and raise awareness of cultural traditions based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.  
 The day’s programme was formally started at the one minute past after the zero hour with placing of floral wreaths on the local central Shahid Minar by Tapan Kumar Biswas, Deputy Commissioner of Bagerhat. Then he was followed Al-haj Dr, Mozammel Hossain, MP of Bagerhat Constituency-4 and president of Bagerhat district unit of Bangladesh Awami Leaague, Al-haj Adv. Mir Shawkat Ali Badsha, MP of Bagerhat Constituency-2 and Chairman of Bagerhat Zila Parishad, Pankaj Chandra Roy, Police Super of Bagerhat, district level officers and socio-political and cultural organizations including Bagerhat Press Club, Muktijoddha Sangsad. In the morning the floral wreath was ceremonially placed by SANAC (Sachetan Nagarik Committe), Bagerhat on be behalf TIB (Transparency International Bangladesh), Bagerhat District Bar Association, Bagerhat Govt. P C College and pther educational institutions.
As the part of the day’s programme national flag was hoisted atop all public and private buildings and educational institutions at the sun rising period, bringing out of ‘Provat Ferry’, decoration of the main roads of the district town with miniature national and coloured-flags inscribed with Bengali alphabets, discussion meeting. Other highlights of the day’s programme are documentary film show based on Language Movement, offering of special prayers in mosques, temples and churches, cultural function. Kishoreganj Staff report adds: The Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day was observed with a call for the united national to introduce Bangla as of its official languages. In 2000, UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural organisation (UNESCO) declared 21, February as International Mother Language Day.
Kishoreganj District Administration, Police Office, RAB- 14, Islamic Foundation, Kishoerganj Press Club, political parties including ruling Awami League, BNP, Jasod, Gonatantrik Party, NAP and Socio-Cultural and voluntary Organisations and educational institutions observing the day with a renewed pledge for building a happy prosperous and non-communal Bangladesh free from militancy and terrorism. National Flag was hoisted at half-mast a top all government buildings, private buildings and educational institutions, culturals organisations Probhat Ferries were brought out in the town that ended at the Shaheed Minar.
Kishoreganj District Administration organised seven daylong begins Book Fair at Old Stadium premise. Dilara Begum Asma MP inaugurated the Book Fair on Saturday. At least 125 Book Stall set-up in the Book Fair.
To mark the Amar Ekushey, District Administration arranged a discussion meeting at old stadium with D.C. Md. Azimuddin Biswas in the chair.

Dupchanchia (Bogra) Correspondent says: Mohan Amar Ekushey was observed enthusiasm in Dupchanchia upazila of Bogra district on Wednesday.
To observe the day, different political and cultural organisations have chalked out programmes elsewhere the upazila. Dupchanchia Sammilitto Pre-cadet School has also taken special progarmmes on the day.
On the day, the national flag flays half-mast in all educational institutions, government, semi-government and autonomous offices and private buildings across the area.
A discussion meeting was arranged by Upazila Nirbahi officer Shaheed Parvez, officer in charge Shaheed, President of upazila Awami-leage Alhaj Mizanur Rahman Khan Shelim, journalist Emdadul Haque jountly at the central Sheheed Minar on the day.
Rangpur from BSS reports: The Shahid Dibosh (Martyrs’ Day) and International Mother Language Day was observed in a befitting manner paying due respect to the language movement martyrs with a fresh pledge for using Bengali at all spheres on Wednesday .
The District Administration, Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC), political parties, private bodies, sociocultural, professional and other organisations, educational institutions and NGOs observed the day through various daylong programmes.
The observance began at the zero hours through placing wreaths by former President, Prime Minister’s Special Envoy and Jatiya Party Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad at Central Shaheed Minar in the city.
Jatiya Party Co-chairman Golam Muhammad Quader, State Minsiter for LRGD and Cooperatives Alhaj Mashiur Rahman Ranga and Jatiya Party leaders accompanied Ershad.
Later, Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa, Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed and Deputy Inspector General of Rangpur Range Khondker Golam Faruk, Zila Parishad Chairman Advocate Chhafia Khanom, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman and Police Super Mizanur Rahman along with other officials placed wreaths there.
Leaders of AL, its associate bodies, BNP, Jatiya Party, JASOD, CPB, BSD, Workers’ Party, Ganatantry Party and other political parties, heads of different departments, organisations and institutions and common people placed wreaths there till noon.
In the morning, thousands of people of all ages in bare feet and wearing black badges took part in ‘probhat ferries’ singing song ‘Amar Bhayer Rakte Rangano Ekushey February—– Ami Ki Bhulite Pari—-‘ to the Central Shaheed Minar and placed wreaths there.
The programmes also included hoisting of the national flag at half-mast atop all government and private buildings and educational institutions, decoration of the city streets with miniature national and coloured-flags inscribed with Bengali alphabets. Competitions for children on drawing, essay writing, hand writing and rendering patriotic songs and sports for the underprivileged children were arranged along with screening of documentary films on the language movement. Special prayers offered at the mosques after Johra prayers and temples, churches, pagodas and other places of religious worships at convenient times.
The local daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly, online and others newspapers published special issues and Rangpur Betar Kendra aired special programmes narrating significance of the day.

Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed attended the main discussion organised by the district administration on the Central Shaheed Minar premises as the chief guest last night with the Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman in the chair.
Language movement veterans Mohammad Afzal and Monwar Hossain, Additional DIG for Rangpur Range police Bashir Ahmed, Zila parisahd Chairman Advocate Chhafia Khanom, President of city Awami league Shafiur Rahman Shafi and its general Secretary Tushar Kanti Mandal, addressed, as special guests.
The speakers said the fresh blood of the language movement martyrs sowed the seed of Independence that was achieved through the War of Liberation in 1971 at the cost of three million best sons and daughters of this soil.
The chief guest said the victory achieved through shedding blood in 1952 created a unique history in the global arena by earning recognition of the United Nations which declared February 21 as the International Mother Language Day.

Various political parties and socio-cultural and volunteer organisations and educational institutions observed the day with a renewed pledge for building a happy, prosperous and non-communal Bangladesh.
Since early in the morning, thousands of people irrespective of age and sex were seen walking barefooted with bunches of flowers in hand towards the nearby Shaheed Minars especially those at Rajshahi College and Bhuban Mohan Park to pay their deep respect to the languages movement heroes and singing “Amar Bhaiyer Rakte Rangano Ekushey February, Ami ki Bhulite Pari” during the time.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) and the district and police administrations also observed the day, taking elaborate programmes.
The programmes include placing wreaths at Shaheed Minar, hoisting national flags at half-mast atop all public and private buildings and mourning procession (probhat ferry), discussion, cultural and literary functions.
The city streets were decorated with miniature national flags and colored flags inscribed with Bengali alphabets.
At zero hours, Awami League Joint Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Organizing Secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Women Affairs Secretary Fazilatunnesha Indira, City unit president AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and its General Secretary Dablu Sarker placed wreaths at the altar of Rajshahi College Shaheed Minar.
Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, and city Mayor Musaddique Hossain Bulbul placed wreaths at Bhuban Mohan Park.
Divisional Commissioner Nur-Ur-Rahman, DIG of Rajshahi Police Khurshid Hussain, RMP Commissioner Mahbubor Rahman, Zila Parishad Chairman Muhammad Ali Sarker and Deputy Commissioner Helal Mahmud Sharif placed wreaths at Court Shaheed Minar.
The day’s programmes also include Quran Khwani and discussion at the Imam Training Academy, art and literary competitions for school and college students at Shishu Academy and Shilpakala Academy, serving improved diets to the inmates of hospitals, jails, safe homes and baby homes and screening of documentary films on the Language Movement.
Marking the day, Language veterans were accorded a reception at the Shilpakala Academy auditorium.
Besides, a discussion and cultural function was organised at the same venue to mark the day, the officials concerned said.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi University (RU), Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) and other educational institutions observed the day through elaborate programmes.
Law enforcement agencies have adopted foolproof security measures facilitating a smooth observance of the day’s programmes.
BSS from Narsingdi reports: The people of Narsingdi on Wednesday observed Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day-2018 paying glowing tributes to the Language Movement martyrs and recalling their outstanding contribution to establishment Bangla as the state language.
Countless people from all walks of life on barefoot placed wreaths at Shaheed Minar adjacent to the local stadium since the clock striking 00:01am on Wednesday.Officials of the district administration, local press club and members of various political, social and cultural organizations joined the public in paying tributes to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement.
A large mourning procession was brought out from the premises of deputy commissioner’s office in the town. The procession ended at the Shaheed Minar through paying wreaths there.
In the evening, a discussion meeting organized by district the administration was held at local Shilpakala Academy.
Deputy commissioner of Narsingdi Subhash Chandra Biswas addressed the function as chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Mohammad Shaiful Islam in the chair.
Chairman of Narsingdi Zila Parishad Abdul Matin Bhuiyan, Police Super Narsingdi Amena Begum, Civil Surgeon Sultana Razia, former principal of Narsingdi Government college Prof Mohammd Ali, former Principal Golam Mostafa Miah, Principal Abdul Kader Mollah City College Dr Moshiur Rahman Mirdha, Principal Narsingdi Zonal Cooperative Centre Hori Das Thakur and president of Narsindgi Press club Morshed Shariar, among others, addressed the meeting.
