Registration of Rohingyas in six districts including Cox’s Bazar has begun on Friday.
The registration is expected to be completed by the last week of March, says Mohammad Wahidur Rahman, deputy director of Cox’s Bazar Statistics Office.
The government has initiated a move for the first time to count the number of unregistered Rohingyas in Bangladesh.
Sources said about 33,000 registered Rohingyas have been living at Rohingya refugee camps in Noyapara of Teknaf and Kutupalang of Ukhia in the district.
Moreover, there are about 5,00,000 unregistered Rohingyas who are living illegally at different districts.
Cox’s Bazar district statistics office says Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) has been conducting the project ”Unregistered Myanmar citizens census-2016″.
The main objective of the project is to create a data-base of unregistered Rohingyas in Bangladesh.
Their current address and previous address in Myanmar before entering Bangladesh will be found out. It will also try to unearth the reason behind their intrusion into Bangladesh.
Deputy Director of district Statistics Office Mohammad Wahidur Rahman is coordinating the census activities.
Wahidur said Cox’s Bazar district has been divided into 49 zones to make a list of households.
A total of 110 supervisors and 1,090 enumerators will prepare the list. Preparing the list of households will continue till February 17.
The statistics official said the census of Rohingyas will be carried out in Chittagong, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Patuakhali.
