Regional powers can stop Myanmar`s brutal army

The New Nation on Monday reported more than 10,000 Rohingyas are crowding at the porous borders to enter into Bangladesh to escape torture, death and destruction of their villages by Myanmar army and Buddhist extremists.

Over 5,000 Rohingyas have already sneaked into Bangladesh making it the most tragic humanitarian crisis since early this month. It is clear to all that the Myanmar government is pursuing a ‘policy of state terrorism’ to wipe out an entire people in its bid to download its internal problems on Bangladesh.

The Hindustan Times in an editorial on Monday said the world has enough refugee crises and should try to avoid making another that may destabilize the region. It has rightly called for concerted efforts by ASEAN countries and India to join Bangladesh to open talks with Myanmar government to bring back peace in the Rakhine State on Bangladesh border and take back the refugees.

The army of Myanmar for their heavy handed rule for decades has lost military discipline. The democracy will die before it becomes a reality in Myanmar if discipline is not imposed on the army. The army has become mostly killers, rapists and looters.

Only the regional powers may let the army in Myanmar to know, it must behave like soldiers and that military will be employed to help the ethnic minority.

Myanmar has many other ethnic populations fighting with the central government on regional issues, but Muslims as one of such ethnic groups has been targeted because of their religious identity. But by doing so we are afraid it is also risking making an entire people militant at the end and Bangladesh will be an unwilling victim of such ethnic war on its border.

The silence of Aung San Suu Kyi who is a decorated Nobel Peace Prize winner makes the World shocked and frustrated as she is not doing anything to save the persecuted Rohingyas when she is heading the government. She won the peace laurel but there is no peace.

It is very much expected the International Commission headed by Suu Kyi and former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will play very important role in using regional help. The civilian government is helpless.
