Bring buses under one banner :
People have grown tired of repeating the fact that Dhaka needs a more comfortable and usable public transport system. Mayor Annisul Huq, before his untimely death, took an initiative to organise and bring together all bus owners under one single banner to form a company in which each owner would hold a proportionate share.
The company was to decide the import of new buses by borrowing from banks at fair interest rates. He even personally spoke with representatives of the Bangladesh Bank and other concerned authorities to make the necessary arrangements.
Had his initiative been implemented, I believe it could have yielded fantastic results. The mad competition on roads could have ended as all buses were to be controlled by one central organisation. Unfit buses could have been dealt with better. Moreover, as profits were to be fairly distributed among owners, there would be less unfair competition. In other words, the system would have become more disciplined.
I urge the authorities to pursue the late mayor’s plan. If the government can organise the public transport system as he envisioned, a lot of our problems will cease to exist.
