The government on Thursday suspended BNP-supported Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) elected Mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul as he has been charged with criminal offences. A source at the Local Government Division wishing anonymity told UNB that they issued a circular on Bulbul’s suspension on Thursday afternoon. “Since the court accepted Bulbul’s name in the charge-sheet of criminal cases, he has been suspended following the Local Government (City Corporation) Act,” he said Sources at the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) said Bulbul has been facing five criminal cases relating to street violence during the BNP-led 20-party’s anti-government movement before and after Januray-5, 2014 election. The local court also accepted chargesheets against him in different cases. Earlier, the RMP commissioner informed the Police Headquarters about the matter through a letter. Later, the Police Headquarters forwarded the letter to the Home Ministry requesting it to inform the Local Government Division to suspend Bulbul for his involvement in criminal cases. According to the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009, the government can suspend mayors or councillors after any court accepted chargesheets against them. Earlier, on January 7, the government also suspended BNP-backed Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Huq Chowdhury and Habiganj Municipality Mayor GK Gaus after they had been indicted in the former finance minister SAMS Kibria murder case.– Dhaka, May 7 (UNB)
