Seven people were killed as a sand-laden truck crashed into a rickshaw van at Malipara Tebbaria in Puthia upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
Five of the deceased were identified as Sumi, 28, wife of Bimal Thakur of Dasmaria, their son Roudra, 5, and niece Puja, 10, Bidyut, 35, and his wife Bristi, 25. The deceased include three children and two women.
Officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Puthia Police Station Hafizur Rahman said the Taherpur-bound truck rammed the van in the area around 5:15pm, leaving six people, including the unidentified van driver, dead on the spot
and an unidentified child injured. The child was whisked off to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared the kid dead. All the victims were the passengers of the rickshaw van, police said. Soon after the accident, locals caught the truck after a hot chase. The anry mob also torched the lorry.
Police arrested the truck driver, Ali Pramanik.
