The city life in Dhaka city almost came to a halt on Saturday due to heavy rainfall under the influence of a powerful land depression originated from the Bay, just after cyclonic storm Komen crossed the country on early Friday over Swandip channel.
The incessant rain caused water logging, traffic jam and also crisis of transports. A large part of the city, especially the low-lying areas, went under knee to waist deep water.
Several areas in city including Shantinagar, Kakrail, Khilgaon, Kamalapur, Demra, Syedabad, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Kalshi, Mirpur, and Shyamoli remained under ankle to knee-deep water for hours, causing immense sufferings to the people. The continuous downpour forced the people to remain stranded in their houses. Many of them could not come out of their houses, business suffered setback, while office employees and college students witnessed acute transportation problem. Consequently, they waded across the murky water or paying higher rickshaw fare.
Matiur Rahman, a resident of Malibagh area, told The New Nation that the municipality could not pump out water quickly due to bad drainage system and as it rained intermittently.
Assistant Commissioner Abu Yusuf of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Traffic- west zone) said, most of the city residents did not come out of their houses on the day it being weekend. The Met office said, light to moderate rain/thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty/squally wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions with moderate to heavy rainfalls at places over Khulna, Barisal, Dhaka and Chittagong divisions and at places elsewhere over the country.
