After a long wait, Md. Raihan Kabir is returning to the country from Malaysia on Friday night. Mr. Raihan was arrested for speaking to media about discriminatory treatment of immigrants in the country.
The immigration department said he would be taken to the airport at 9pm local time on Friday.
Datuk Khairul Dazaimi, director-general of the country’s immigration department said, “There are no allegations against Md. Raihan Kabir. Therefore, after completing all the procedures,
the members of the immigration department will reach him to the airport at 9 pm on Friday.”
On Wednesday, Raihan Kabir’s two lawyers, K Sumita Shathinni and C Selvaraja, said he would be sent home if he got a flight ticket after the results of the Covid-19 screening were good. No further complaints will be made by the Immigration Department.
In an interview of a program titled ‘Locked Up in Malaysia’s Lockdown’, Raihan Kabir said that immigrants living in Malaysia have been discriminated against and racist in the ongoing lockdown by the country’s law enforcement agencies. When the 25-minute documentary was aired on international broadcaster Al-Jazeera a few weeks ago, there was a huge uproar across Malaysia.
Shortly afterward, the public was asked to co-operate in the arrest of Raihan Kabir in order to co-operate in the investigation against him under the Immigration Act 1959/63. Shortly afterwards, on July 24, Raihan Kabir was arrested on a tip-off from a condominium in Jalan Pahang of Malaysian capital.
