Sheikh Arif Bulbon :
The 2nd solo print exhibition exhibition entitled Transformation by artist Md Rafiqul Islam is going on at La Galerie of the Alliance Française de Dhaka (AFD) in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.
Prof Abul Barq Alvi, Honorary Professor, Department of Printmaking, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka and eminent artist Shahid Kabir attended the event as the special guests.
Social reality is the principal topic of Rafiqul’s artwork. Its slogan is: “We want peace, not war.” World civilization is reaching its peak. Humanity is on a course to conquer the universe.
But even after all this progress; people engage in battles, they get caught up in war games. We are growing up not with humane feelings, but with ferocious aggression. Our nature is getting more and more violent. Surely no one wants to go down this path. Transformation -1, 2, 3, The War Child, Hunter and The Birth speak of this difficult reality.
Wheels are another important part of his work. We know that wheels are what made human civilization progress from the primitive to the modern era. Wheels represent power. But wheels trapped in chains remind us of our dire social conditions. That is why the artist’s wheels want to break free from the chains.
Printmaking is a very interesting method of creating art. It has a lot of subtypes like woodcut, etching, lithography, etc.
Rafiquil has worked with almost all of these media, with his personal favorite being intaglio.
There are around 50 artworks will be in display for this exhibition. The media used include etching, aquatint, lithography, woodcut, cyanotype etc. The artist adores nature. So some artworks inspired by nature are also present at the exhibition.
The exhibition will continue till October 12. Visiting Hours: Monday to Thursday from 3:00pm to 9:00pm, Friday and Saturday (9:00am to12:00 noon and 5:00pm to 8:00pm). Closed on Sunday. n
