The Cabinet on Monday approved a proposal for signing the ‘Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons’ on the sidelines of the upcoming 72nd UN General Assembly session in New York this month.
The approval was given at the regular weekly meeting of the Cabinet held at the Prime Minister’s Office with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said the Prime Minister will sign the treaty on behalf of Bangladesh aimed at fulfilling the common aspirations of a world without nuclear weapons. The countries at a meeting at the United Nations in New York on July 7 last adopted the Treaty by a vote of 122 countries in favour, one against with one abstention. It is the first multilateral legally-binding instrument for nuclear disarmament to have been negotiated in 20 years.
The treaty is to prohibit a full range of nuclear weapon-related activities, such as to develop, test, produce, manufacture, acquire, possess or stockpile nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices, as well as the use or threat of use of these weapons.
The treaty will be open for signature to all states at UN Headquarters in New York on September 20. And it will come into force 90 days after it has been ratified by at least 50 countries.
The Cabinet also approved a proposal for signing an agreement between Bangladesh and the UAE titled ‘Air Services Agreement between Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates’.
The Cabinet Secretary said the agreement would be drafted in both Bengali and Arabic, and there have been slight changes in the new agreement from the existing agreement which remained in force from 1988.
Under the proposed new agreement, more than one flight operators nominated by both the respective countries apart from the national flag carriers of Bangladesh and the UAE would be able to operate flights.
The Minister of Communication of the UAE and Chairman of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh would sign the agreement on behalf the respective countries.
The Cabinet meeting was also apprised about the preparations of the government in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals 2030. Planning Division informed the Cabinet meeting about the government’s preparations regarding the SDGs.
“We’ve almost achieved cent percent MDGs and our position is also good regarding SDGs,” Shafiul Alam said adding that the government has recently submitted a Voluntary National Report at the UN headquarters on SDGs. At the beginning of the meeting, the Cabinet adopted a condolence motion at the death of legendary singer Abdul Jabbar. Renowned singer Abdul Jabbar, best known for his patriotic songs, passed away on the morning of August 30 at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
