Sylhet Bureau :
Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) started a joint drive to inspect all gas and oxygen cylinder businesses in the city from yesterday.
In an emergency meeting at the city hall yesterday, SCC declared the special drive in cooperation with the Department of Explosives, Power Development Board, Jalalabad Gas T&D System, police and fire department.
In the joint drive, the authorities will visit all cylinder stores and warehouses in the city, and verify required papers, security measures and other factors. Thereafter, they will take legal actions against illegal and risky businesses.
The city corporation and other authorities concerned vowed to start campaigning to raise awareness among people.
Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury said, ‘The risk of accidents is rising as there is no control over gas and oxygen cylinder businesses in the city, and it must be controlled for safety.’
On Friday afternoon, an oxygen cylinder explosion injured five persons, including two journalists, in Bagbari area of the city.
The explosion occurred while the cylinders were being unloaded in an unsafe way from a truck to a wholesale storage. Police seized the truck later on.
