Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury with a proposal to launch a monorail to speed up the city’s transportation system was met by a team from Chinese company Wehai International Economic and Technical Co-operative Company Limited and China Railway Construction Company Limited.
The meeting was held at noon on Wednesday at the city’s Tiger Pass Corporation building. Bilateral talks between the CCC mayor and the managing director of the Chinese company Weihai raised a number of important issues.
During the discussion, the mayor wanted to know how long it would take to launch the monorail, the amount of financial expenditure, the availability of funds, the difference between Metrorail and monorail. Responding to the mayor’s interest, the managing director of China Weihai said the monorail is a state-of-the-art rail system. Its cost and management will be with the help of China.
In the case of monorail, it will save 40 percent more than metro rail. This does not require a lot of space and the line can be turned on during installation. On the other hand, it is possible to install monorail in two-and-a-half years.
The mayor listened to their proposals and urged them to submit detailed information in writing.
He said the proposal of Metrorail has already been discussed in the city and feasibility study has been completed by surveying and monitoring the four routes of the city from AK Khan to Karnafuli Bridge, Shah Amanat Airport from Kalurghat, Airport from Oxygen, Airport from Lalkhan Bazar.
After considering these two proposals, it would be better to consider the population density, time and financial savings, and introduce monorail to make the transportation system sustainable.
