UNB, Gazipur :
Four garment workers, including a couple, were burned to death in a fire at a colony in Palli Bidyut area under Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur district early Monday.
The deceased were identified as Milon, his wife Munni, Awal and Farhad of Gaibandha district.
Kabirul Alam, station officer of Kaliakoir Fire Service and Control Room, said the fire broke out at the colony around 5:45 am and it spread soon, leaving the four people dead and some others injured.
The fire burned down nearly 50 tin-shed houses.
On information, four fire-fighting units from
Kaliakoir and Joydebpur rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze.
The firefighters also recovered four charred bodies from the spot while putting out the blaze.
However, it is still not clear what caused the fire.
The residents of the colony said the fire might have originated from a gas cylinder while the fire service men blamed it to electric short-circuit for the fire.
It will be clear what actually caused the fire after investigation, fire service officials said.
Meanwhile, leaders and activists of local political parties visited the spot and distributed food and clothes among the affected people.
Police sent the bodies to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College and Hospital morgue. A CID team also visited the spot and collected samples for investigation.
Fires at slums in Dhaka, home to many low-income people, are quite common and that leave thousands of their residents homeless.
According to data compiled by Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, there were 174 fire incidents at slums in Dhaka, Chattogram and Rangpur last year.
