Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has put emphasis on manufacturing fire-fighting instruments locally instead of importing to ensure fire safety in the country.
“Unexpected and tragic collapse of Rana Plaza opened up our eyes. Now we are thinking that fire safety and security is a must for industries of the country. Aiming to ensure it, equipments related to fire safety should be made locally,” he said.
He made the call while addressing the inaugural session of the 3-day long international expo on fire safety and security held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital under the auspices of Electronics Safety and Security Association of Bangladesh (ESSAB) on Thursday.
He said ready-made garment industries brought unprecedented success for the country as the lion’s share of country’s export earning comes from that sector.
In continuation of the success, there are seven top green factories in Bangladesh among 10 best factories across the globe, he said, adding that to protect these factories, ‘Electronic Safety and Security’ is very important.
Once upon a time, the country had to spend a large sum of money to bring experts from abroad to make designs for fire safety, he said, adding: “Now the experts of the country are doing the same. Our ability has increased sharply in this regard.”
