Members of joint inquiry teams have started investigation into the killing of Italian citizen Cesare Tavella, emphasizing four possible points into consideration.
These are: enmity at work place of Cesare, woman-related issue, politics where the government’s image could be tarnished, and link with sending people to Italy.
The officials of detective branch (DB), criminal investigation department (CID) and other intelligence services related with the investigation placed the causes in a meeting held in this regard.
Monirul Islam, Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Head of the joint-investigation team said this while he was talking to the reporters after visiting the incident place in the city’s Gulshan on Thursday afternoon. Police could not identify any cause behind the motive of the murder, the DMP spokesman said.
He also said they are engaging their all-out efforts to unearth the mystery behind the murder.
“To trace the killers and identify the motive behind the incident are now main goal of the investigation,” the DMP spokesman said.
He said detectives have interrogated Cesare’s colleagues, the guard of Cesare’s residence, the people who use to visit Cesare, and many others using Cesare’s mobile calls.
DB also interrogated the health club officials of American International School at Baridhara. Before Cesare was killed, he was jogging and back home after he had a swim at the club’s pool.
He said, “The killers fled, using road 83 of Gulshan-2 after the murder. The killers were not identified as the video footages of the close circuit (CCTV) cameras of the road were not clear. However, footage of other CCTV cameras of Gulshan is being examined.”
Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Benazir Ahmed also visited the place of occurrence on Wednesday. Talking with the reporters he said the elite force is assisting DMP in the investigation.
The DG said that the Italian national was killed in a planned way to embarrass the nation.
“We’re sure that the killing was carried out with a motive to embarrass the nation,” he said.
Earlier, an 11-member committee was formed to investigate the killing of Cesare Tavella, headed by DB Deputy Commissioner (East) Mahbub Alam, which would assist the special inquiry team of the police headquarters.
The 11-member committee has four additional deputy commissioners, and six assistant commissioners.
Another special inquiry team was formed by the police headquarters on Tuesday, to probe the murder incident.
Italian national Cesare Tavella, 50, an official of the Netherlands-based non-governmental organisation ‘ICCO Cooperation’, was shot to death by some miscreants at the end of road 90 of the Gulshan diplomatic zone on Monday evening.
The body of Cesare has been kept in the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) morgue.
