UNB, Dhaka :
State minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan on Monday said investigation is underway to determine the culprits in the attempt to kidnap and possibly assassinate Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
“We will find out the BNP men who are involved in the attempt to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’sson Sajeeb Wazed Joy. Rab is investigating the matter. Apart from the Rab, other law enforcement agencies will also work in this regard,” Asaduzzaman Khan told UNB over phone.
A US court, according to media reports, sentenced two persons, including a Bangladeshi, over a bribery scheme for collecting information on Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to kidnap and harm Joy and his family members.
The Bangladeshi national was identified as Rizve Ahmed Ceaser, 36, son of Mohammed Ullah Mamun of Fairfield, Connecticut.
Meanwhile Joy, in a Facebook status dated March 9 confirmed that on March 4 he “provided a victim statement in court before the sentencing of Rizvi Ahmed Caesar”.
Joy, also the Prime Minister’s adviser on ICT, came down hard on the media and civil society for not condemning the BNP for their alleged involvement in the plot.
A US Department of Justice press release pertaining to the case states: “In pleading guilty, Thaler (the other accused) and Ahmed admitted that, from September 2011 through March 2012, Thaler and FBI Special Agent Robert Lustyik solicited payments from Ahmed, in exchange for Lustyik’s agreement to provide internal, confidential documents and other confidential information to which Lustyik had access by virtue of his position as an FBI Special Agent. Thaler was Lustyik’s friend, and Ahmed, a native of Bangladesh, was an acquaintance of Thaler. The confidential documents and information pertained to a prominent citizen of Bangladesh who was affiliated with a political party opposing Ahmed’s views.”
It is presumed the “prominent citizen of Bangladesh” referred to in the statement is Joy, who is long resident in the US. The case statement doesn’t confirm the identity of the would-be victim.
Rizvi’s father is a vice president of pro-BNP cultural body Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas).
In reply to a question whether any top leader of BNP was involved in the attempt, the state minister said “We have just heard the incident. We will find out whoever s/he is through investigation.”
