New cases surpasses 1000 in one day, 11 more die

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said on Monday that Bangladesh’s Covid-19 count had for the first time seen an increase of more than 1,000 cases in 24 hours.
“One thousand and thirty-four people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. This is the highest number of infections detected in a day so far in the country. With this, the total number of infected has reached 15,691,” said Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, additional director general (administration) of DGHS, during a briefing.
She said the highest infection rate count continues to be in Dhaka Division and the Dhaka metropolitan area.
“A total of 7,208 samples were tested in 37 labs across the country since yesterday. Besides, 11 people died with coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours and the death toll now stands at 239 while the death rate is at 1.53 per cent,” said Dr Nasima.
Among the deceased, five were male, Dr Nasima said adding that one of them was between 71-80 years old, one 61-70, four 51-60, two 41-50, two between 31-40 and one between 21-30 years old. Eight of them were from Dhaka division, two from Chattogram division and one from Rangpur division, she said.
A new laboratory was opened in Abdul Malek Ukil Medical College, taking the total number of labs in the country to 37, she said.
Nasima also revealed that 252 Covid-19 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of people who have made full recovery to 2,902.
According to these latest figures, considering the infection rate, Bangladesh is currently seeing a 1.53% death rate from Covid-19 and an 18.52% recovery rate.Now, 2,236 people are in isolation and around 1,176 were released from isolation. A total of 8,634 isolation beds were prepared across the country, the Addl DG said.
She said a total of 183 people were put under isolation in the last 24 hours.
Dedicated hotlines have received 1,35,495 phone calls in the last 24 hours while a total of 47,93,512 phone calls have been received till now.
In the last 24 hours, 827 persons were screened at all entry points of the country, including 382 persons at airports, Nasima added.
On May 8, Covid-19 deaths crossed the 200-mark in Bangladesh, a month after the first three cases were detected.
So far, the fast spreading coronavirus has infected more than 4,201,743 people and claimed over 284,198 lives across the world till Monday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
More than 1.5 million people have recovered worldwide from the deadly disease so far on Monday.
