Probe body suggests termination of 4 cops

A probe body, formed to investigate the ‘police firing’ on demonstrators in Kalihati upazila of Tangail that left four people dead and 50 others injured in 2015, has suggested terminating four policemen responsible for the incident. On conclusion of the departmental probe by the Tangail district police after two years of the tragedy,
the committee recommended punishment of eight policemen, said Mahbub Alam, superintendent of Tangail police.
The probe report was sent to the Police Headquarters in Dhaka on Tuesday, the police super added.
The policemen who are recommended to be fired are Munsef Ahmed, the then sub-inspector (SI) of Ghatail Police Station, Salim Uddin, SI of Kalihati Police Station, and constables Ziaul Haque and Aminul Islam.
The probe body also suggested putting the increment process of four other policemen-Omar Faruk, SI of Ghatail Police Station, Abul Bashar, SI of Kalihati Police Station, Constables Mahtab Uddin and Tomal Barmon-on hold.
On September 18, 2015, four people were killed and 50 others injured, as police allegedly opened fire and charged baton on some people demonstrating against torture on a youth and his mother in Kalihati upazila.
The incident took place when police intercepted a procession brought out by a group of people of Kalihati and Ghatail upazilas during their march towards Kalihati Police Station to lay a siege to it demanding exemplary punishment of the culprits who had stripped naked a youth in front of his mother and took photo of the incident at Satutia village in the upazila.
